Madeleine is at the age (and probably will be for a while) where she constantly wants to buy things and doesn't understand why we can't just take/buy what we want.
We started to talk to her about money and how we have to pay for things - we've had a few 'shoplifting' experiences so this was a timely talk. With this short introduction to money she decided she wanted to earn money to buy Swedish Fish - the ultimate reward around here, fruit snacks on steroids. I found this too hard to resist as one of my earliest memories is climbing over a railing in a parking lot of 7-11 to buy Sweedish Fish with my dad.
After little chores around the house, taking good naps, helping without being asked, learning to 'obey like Nephi', babysitting for our 6 month old neighbor (sitting within 6 inches of him in his bouncer, talking to him in a crazy high-pitched voice, and putting the blanket on him when it slipped an inch, all for the 15 minutes he was over earned her two nickles!) searching for coins on the ground (a surprisingly fruitful method) and listening the first time she was asked she finally had enough money to go and buy those fishies.
She was quite the sight in the store and was happy to exchange coins for fishies and loved the attention everyone in the store gave her as she went around telling everyone the story of why she had money but wasn't an adult.
One proud moment in the life of a 3 year old!
